Motor Run Capacitors vs. Starting Capacitors

Motor run capacitors and starting capacitors perform different functions and should not be treated as interchangeable components.

A motor run capacitor is generally intended to remain connected during normal motor operation, while a starting capacitor is used to assist the motor during startup and is typically removed or disconnected from the starting circuit after the motor reaches the required operating condition.

For this reason, capacitance alone is not sufficient when selecting an INCO replacement capacitor. The original capacitor type and circuit function must also be verified.

Understanding INCO Part Numbers

The complete INCO part number is important when identifying a replacement capacitor. A SINTEX model code may contain multiple sections identifying the product family and configuration.

Capacitance is one of the primary parameters in a motor capacitor, but voltage rating, tolerance, frequency, construction, terminals, and physical dimensions must also be considered.

The voltage information printed on the original capacitor should therefore be reviewed carefully rather than selecting a replacement solely from the microfarad value.
